Trail riders celebrating 50 years

The Badlands Trail Riders will celebrate the club’s 50th anniversary with a day of trail rides and festivities Saturday at the Little Missouri State Park north of Killdeer.

The Badlands Trail Riders began in 1960, with an open invitation to anyone who wanted to bring a horse and ride the Badlands.

The first ride was held over Labor Day weekend at Halliday Springs in the south unit of the Theodore Roosevelt National Park, where 50 people and horses camped.

Art Shipley and Orv Lowitz were the organizers and the club was formed about a month later. It adopted as its purpose: “To better promote North Dakota and its people through an annual Badlands Trail Ride.”

Labor Day rides in the Badlands have been an annual tradition ever since. Many of the current members were kids with their parents on those early rides. The 1965  Labor Day ride included 280 riders from four states starting with a 22-mile ride.  The club sponsored a 100-mile ride as well, but limited the number of riders to 25.

The club has two or three rides each year, and has sponsored rides in the north and south units of the National Park as well as along the Maah Daah Hey Trail, the Logging Camp Ranch south of Amidon and the Little Missouri State Park near Killdeer.

This year’s event will be at the Little Missouri State Park,  featuring a catered banquet and program, followed by a dance with the Marv Allen DJ Show.

The club has produced a 200-page anniversary book in which members have included trail stories.  The book was compiled by Linda Morrow Schauer and edited by the club historian Linda Shipley Vettel. A limited number of books are available through the club’s website: www.badlandstrairidersnd.co

Welcome Trail Riders

The Badlands Trail Riders is a non-profit organization that has promoted the natural beauty of the North Dakota Badlands. Since 1960, it has been bringing together horsemen and horses of all ages, types and locations. It strives to create a bond to the badlands regions through appreciation of the beauty and enjoyment of the outdoors through family and group horse activities. It is great fun for the whole family from kids on ponies, mom and dad on their tried and true steeds, to expert riders on show horses. And of course those adventurous souls with their mules and draft teams.

There are two annual rides, one in the Spring and one over Labor Day weekend.  The Labor Day ride takes place at the Little Missouri State Park north of Killdeer North Dakota.  The spring ride is usually in other areas of the North Dakota Badlands.  Keep checking back on updates for both of the rides.

This year we will be Celebrating our 50th Anniversary on the Labor Day Ride.  Please see our Labor Day Ride page for more information regarding our celebration.
